The CEECEC trial online course “Teaching and Learning Ecological Economics with Civil Society
Organizations” is now accepting applications!
CEECEC (Civil Society Engagement with ECological EConomics), is a European Commission FP7 funded
project that aims to enable civil society Organisations (CSOs) to engage in and lead collaborative research
with ecological economists.

Running from April 12, 2010 – July 02, 2010, CEECEC will be piloting an online course on ecological
economics, free of cost. This is based on case studies written by environmental NGOs in different
countries. A selected number of students from around the globe, preferably from NGOs but also from
public administration, universities, or any other profession will have the opportunity to participate. In total
a commitment of 12 hours per week for 12 weeks is required to complete the course.

The course will require learners to:
• read 1/2 case studies and related glossary entries per week (ex Monday, 4hrs),
• consider and discuss questions for reflection in an online forum (Wed 1.5 hrs), before
• listening to a 30-minute online lecture (0.5 hrs Power Point with audio), and then
• do further reading in order to complete a set exercise or task at the end of each unit, every week (up to 6
hrs).

The number of participants is limited to 25, leaving room for interaction between students and recognised
ecological economic experts. The course is organised under the leadership of Prof. Joan Martinez-Alier of the
Institute of Environmental Sciences (ICTA) the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Students will be challenged to
link real-life case studies to the broader field of ecological economics and to understand the basic concepts and
methods of ecological economics in their application to a wide variety of environmental conflicts.

Course Structure:
Lectures will be based around concepts and methods found within individual case studies as featured on
the CEECEC website (http://www.ceecec.net/case-studies/ ). Each week, students will log in and be
directed to read a case study and be given questions for individual reflection, with a final “preparatory”
question on an open discussion board (Opening). This activity will be followed by a conceptual lecture
(informing). The lecture will then be followed by a task on the Moodle that could be either a short essay,
quiz. groupwork, or an online debate-discussion (Feedback), with links to relevant resources provided. The
type of task may vary with each weekly topic, and students’ performance will be evaluated / assessed
weekly by the lecturer teaching that unit.

To take the course, there is no need for any formal degree or qualifications. Motivation is important.
Ability to read English is required. Answers to questions are to be written preferably in English, but French
and Spanish will also be accepted.

In exchange for the opportunity to participate in this course, learners are asked to complete an
evaluation questionnaire upon its completion.
